Emotional abuse is where manipulation is used in a relationship to control it. This abuse can be by way of intimidation, verbal attacks, humiliation, bullying or isolation.
A person who is emotionally abused often has difficulties sleeping, eating and food issues, substance abuse habits. They often suffer from depression, anxiety and obsessive-compulsive behaviours. Some can possibly have thoughts of self-harm or suicide.
- Is your relationship not how you think or want it to be?
- Do you feel as though your confidence is at an all-time low?
- Are you tired of the arguments?
- Do others tell you that you are too “nice” and you deserve better?
- Are you in, or have recently left an abusive relationship?
- You want to put the broken parts of yourself back together again and find out who you really are?
Emotional abuse is one of the hardest forms of abuse to recognize. It can be subtle and insidious or overt and manipulative. Either way, it chips away at the victim’s self-esteem and they begin to doubt their perceptions and reality.
The underlying goal of emotional abuse is to control the victim by discrediting, isolating, and silencing.
In the end, the victim feels trapped. They are often too wounded to endure the relationship any longer, but also too afraid to leave. So the cycle just repeats itself until something is done.
