What is EMDR therapy?
Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) therapy is a treatment used for helping to heal traumatic or distressing memories.
It does not involve talking in detail about the particular issue. It focuses on changing the emotions, thoughts, or behaviours of the traumatic or distressing issue.
An EMDR treatment session can last up to 90 minutes.
After gathering information about the goals of the client, the therapist will move their fingers back and forth in front of the clients face, or use musical tones and then ask them to follow these hand motions with their eyes.
At the same time, the client recalls a disturbing event (it won’t be in great detail) so as to distress them) This will include the images, thoughts, emotions and how the body sensations felt.
This is repeated several times and the incident will be gauged on a 1 – 10 basis.
Gradually, the client will shift their thoughts to reinforce more positive thoughts, emotions and beliefs.
EMDR focuses on changing the emotions, thoughts or behaviours that result from the distressing experience. This enables a natural healing process to occur in the brain.
This form of therapy is an effective treatment for people suffering from anxiety, panic, PTSD, or trauma. To be able to reprogram the past.
